The aim of this paper is to explore the intersection between Nietzsche’s philosophy and photography, with an emphasis on the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson, particularly in Children playing in the ruins (1933). To achieve this objective, we will analyze the Nietzschean concepts of Apollonian and Dionysian principles and their relation to photography practice, as well as integrate Vilém Flusser’s philosophy of photography and François Soulages’s aesthetic reflection. The chosen methodology includes a bibliographic review, with special attention directed to the works of Nietzsche, Flusser and Soulages, along with the analysis of Cartier-Bresson’s images. The results show that photography goes beyond the mere representation of reality, as it functions as a vehicle for reflection and aesthetic contemplation. The fusion of the Apollonian and Dionysian principles in Cartier-Bresson’s work reveals the ability photography has to capture both the order and beauty as well as the chaos and intensity of life, allowing the observer to reach a deeper understanding of human existence. Thus, this paper reiterates the importance of photography in contemporary culture, highlighting its role as a tool for communication, reflection and transformation.
