A criticism of the ontological structure of language in Gadamer’s hermeneutics

The criticism developed in this text stems from the speculative structure of language. Gadamer’s research on the ontology of language led him to rescue contingency, to overcome the instrumentalization of language, and, finally, to consider the speculative structure of language. However, in spite of his extensive investigation, Gadamer does not consider imagination, memory and virtuality as structural dimensions of understanding. By ignoring the role of controversy, virtuality, memory, and imagination, Gadamer exposes his project of an ontology of language to criticism, since our understanding is not composed only of language. These four elements - controversy, virtual, memory and imagination - enlarge the hermeneutic field and point to an ontology of the virtual being.
