Multiculturalism and the theoretical divergences on multicultural debate

Abstract

Within the debates on multiculturalism, we have a fairly wide variety of lines of thought and very different proposals offering solutions to certain problems faced by several cultures. There are many groups trying to maintain their values and practices within a global reality in which peoples’ actions and thoughts are homogenized. From this perspective, we intend here to analyze the differences that arise from the varieties of "multiculturalisms", trying to offer an explanation in relation to issues that are relevant to each type of multiculturalism. We will explore some of the approaches that arise in multiculturalism, which may contain some ethnocentric aspects. At last, we will present Peter McLaren’s critical multiculturalism as a viable theoretical alternative to overcome the problem. My intention is to explain the link between the type of multiculturalism defended by one position and the problems or issues to which it is linked
