Interview with Michel Foucault
Abstract
Translator’s Note: Conducted by André Scala and Gilles Barbedette on May 29, 1984, shortly before the hospitalization of the philosopher, who died on June 25 of the same year. Accepting this last interview, despite the state of exhaustion in which he found himself, was undoubtedly a gesture of friendship directed to Gilles Deleuze, close to André Scala. Foucault had just received the first edition of The use of pleasure and The care of the self. He could not re-read the interview and delegated the task of cutting and using the text to his companion Daniel Defert, who published some excerpts in Dits et écrits ten years later. The excerpt published here was extracted from the complete recording of the interview made available by the French newspaper Libération in June this year and is unpublished in Portuguese.
