Abstract

The aim of the present article is to examine the relationship between the Lithuanian philosopher Emmanuel Lévinas and the philosophy of education. First, we discuss the possible meanings of the encounter between Lévinas and the educational field. Second, we outline the philosopher’s contributions to educational thought by drawing on his critique of Totality and on the notions of Infinity, alterity, the Other, and exposure, arguing that Lévinas allows us to conceive education beyond the paradigm of formation. Third, we address the possible limitations of alterity in Lévinas, following the interpretations of two of his critics, Enrique Dussel and Jacques Derrida. Finally, we argue that Lévinas’s philosophy provides important elements for constructing, from a philosophy of alterity, an educational philosophy of the common.
